Quarry Hill School celebrating its 40th year

MIDDLEBURY — Quarry Hill School is finishing up 40 years of operation on Friday, June 7. The annual watermelon picnic for the families whose children currently attend the school will mark the completion of the school year. And a special celebration is planned that includes the hundreds of children and family who can call Quarry Hill School the place where their earliest educational memories occurred: The school will host a party at Lincoln Peak Vineyard on Saturday, June 8, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Live music by the Doughboys will be featured as well as a cash bar and food. School Director Su White says efforts have been made to invite all the families that have been involved in the school since 1972. That list has over 400 names on it.
Susan Gallagher Borg founded Quarry Hill School in 1972 on Middlebury’s Quarry Road. The basic mission of the school is to provide a setting for young children where they can explore two key concepts: “I am apart from everyone else” and “I am a part of the whole world.” With these ideas in mind, the core teaching team of five develops curriculum that includes explorations, the arts, physical activity, social engagement and community involvement, alongside exposure to more traditional core areas of language arts, math and science. Borg, as teacher/director, passed the torch to White in the mid-’80s.
Guided by the notion that teaching through example and learning through meaningful and playful discovery are the most honest and effective methods for reaching children, the veteran teaching team of Su White, Stephanie Smith, Rosie Lovshin, Lynn Goldsmith and Samantha Farrell-Schmitt know they are responsible for working as team members and communicating ideas, feelings, and concerns. The team strives to promote the sense that everyone can be a lifelong learner and encourages children to practice making responsible and creative choices within the framework of a daily routine.
Quarry Hill School encourages big hearts and peace. The commitment to a community built on individual and family participation with an underlying sense of responsibility and caring is palpable when you enter the building. Hundreds of children have attended the school, some of whom are now returning with their own children and many of whom are now part of the local vibrant Addison County community. Each of these “Quarry Hill kids”is a part of the 40-year history.
T-shirts and stickers will be on sale at the celebration. For more information contact the school at 388-7297 or on the web at www.quarryhillschool.org.
