Boys’ basketball teams drop final games

MOUNT ABE SENIOR Liam Kelliher goes up for two points vs. visiting North Country on Friday. North Country edged the Eagles despite Kelliher’s game-high 16 in his final home game.

ADDISON COUNTY — In the final regular season local boys’ basketball games last week, Middlebury, Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Otter Valley all finished on losing notes.
The Vermont Principals Association was set to release playoff pairings early on Monday, with first-round games scheduled for this Tuesday and Wednesday and quarterfinals this coming weekend. Only MUHS will host a first-round matchup.
This article will be updated on Monday at addisonindependent.com detailing the teams’ schedules.
TIGERS
On Wednesday visiting Enosburg edged the Tigers, 50-48. Ethan Williams led the Hornets with 15 points.
Tyler Buxton scored 13 for MUHS.
On Friday host St. Albans defeated the Tigers, 60-52. Details on that game were unavailable.
Despite the setbacks the 11-9 Tigers were seeded No. 6 in Division II. The Tigers will host first-round home game with Lamoille (10-10) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, and if they prevail play a Saturday quarterfinal at 2 p.m. against either no. 3 Montpelier (17-3) or No. 14 Spaulding (4-16).
EAGLES
At Mount Abe on Friday North Country escaped with a 58-53 victory by hitting its free throws in the final 2:37. The Eagles had rallied from 10 down at the half to take a 50-49 lead, but Corbin Brueck hit three free throws at 2:37 to put NCU back in front, and the 16-4 Falcons soon after iced the game from the line Brueck. Brett Roy scored 15 to lead NCU, the No. 4 seed in D-II.
Liam Kelliher (16 points), Quincy Cook (11) and Henry Cogswell (10) all reached double figures as the Eagles finished 8-12.
The Eagles earned the No. 13 seed in D-II and will at No. 4 North Country (16-4) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. If the Eagles reverse two regular-season losses to the Falcons, they will play a Friday quarterfinal vs. either No. 5 Mill River (5-15) or No. 12 Hartford (9-11).
COMMODORES
On Friday visiting Milton (12-8) defeated VUHS, 57-44. Kyle Brown scored 17 for the Yellowjackets. Josias Salomao (10 points, seven rebounds) and Luke Bergmans (seven points, eight boards) paced the Commodores.
The 0-20 Commodores, because they have earned points by playing D-I and D-II teams, earned the No. 15 seed in D-III despite their record. They will face No. 2 Randolph (13-7) in the first round at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Commodores and Ghosts did not play one another during the regular season. If the Commodores prevail they will play a 2 p.m. Saturday quarterfinal against either No. 7 Thetford (10-10) or No. 10 Green Mountain Union (9-11).
OTTERS
On Thursday visiting Fair Haven (19-1) nailed down the top seed in D-II by topping OV, 66-47. Slaters Zack Ellis and Kohlby Murray each scored 18 points. Alex Philo (12) and Dylan Gaboriault (10) led the Otters.
On Saturday visiting Springfield pulled away late to defeat OV, 53-43. Cosmo Noah Zierfus scored 20. Julian Lopez led OV with 13; he and Logan Trombley are the Otters’ only seniors.
The 3-17 Otters failed to crack the top 16 in D-II and will not participate in the postseason.
