Boys’ hoop: Tigers top VUHS; Mt. Abe wins

ADDISON COUNTY — Middlebury got past Vergennes, while Mount Abraham split two games and Otter Valley broke into the win column in recent high school boys’ basketball action.
MUHS, VUHS and Mount Abe all were set to play on Wednesday night after the deadline for this edition of the Independent.

TIGERS-VUHS
On March 4 host MUHS overcame a slow start and defeated the visiting Commodores, 60-47. The Tigers got back in the game with a 16-0 run in the second quarter and iced the win with a 14-0 surge in the fourth period.
Gabe Dunn led three Tigers in double figures with 17 points, Karic Riche scored 14, and Max Alberts chipped in 11. MUHS improved to 4-3 with its third straight victory.
VUHS freshman Tyler Bergmans tied Dunn for game honors with 17 points as the Commodores dropped to 1-4.

EAGLES
On March 4 the Eagles used balanced scoring and a third-period surge to overcome visiting Mill River, 47-33. Minuteman Johnny Verdon scored a game-high 15, including three first-half threes, as the visitors trailed by just 20-19 at the break.
The Eagles then went on a decisive 18-4 third-quarter run. Seven Eagles scored at least four points led by Henry Cogswell (nine), and Quincy Cook and Griffin Paradee (seven apiece). Mount Abe’s record moved to 3-4.

OTTERS
On Tuesday the Otters defeated host Mill River, 73-50, for their first victory of the winter. OV broke the game open by outscoring the Minutemen by 23-8 in the fourth quarter. Verdon scored a game-high 17 points for MRU (1-7), which will visit MUHS on Saturday.
The 1-6 Otters countered with a balanced attack led by Alex Philo with 13 and Hayden Bernhardt with 12.
