Field hockey tourney pairings set

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vermont Principals’ Association announced Division II post-season pairings on Tuesday morning. Mount Abraham (4-1) earned the top seed and will open the playoffs by hosting a quarterfinal on Friday against the winner of a Wednesday game between No. 8 Hartford (2-5) and No. 9 Brattleboro (2-6).
Either No. 4 Woodstock (4-2-1) or No. 5 St. Johnsbury (4-3) would visit the Eagles at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday if the Eagles prevail on Friday.
Otter Valley (3-3-2) was awarded the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 MUHS (0-7) on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. That game’s winner gets a date at No. 2 Burr & Burton (6-1) on Saturday at 11 a.m., assuming BBA has no further COVID-19 issues; the school’s weekend activities were canceled. A Tuesday semifinal would be next, probably at No. 3 U-32 (5-2).
The time, date and location of the D-II final has yet to be determined.
In the final week of the regular season, OV went unbeaten in three road outings, the Eagles took their first loss, and MUHS lost twice to top D-I teams.

OTTERS
On Oct. 14 OV settled for a 1-1 deadlock at Woodstock. The Otters took the lead on an early Brittney Jackson strike, but did not score again despite 13 penalty corners and a 12-6 edge in shots on goal.
On Oct. 15 Fair Haven surprised OV by knotting them up, 2-2. OV had defeated the 0-4-1 Slaters, by a score of 8-0 in Brandon earlier in the week.
This time around the Slaters, playing their first home game of the season, got a strong effort in the cage from Laurel Boutwell and twice rallied from one-goal deficits. Chloe Shaddock and Abby Wetmore scored for FHU, and Alice Keith and Madison Colburn got the OV goals.
On Monday the Otters blanked host Springfield, 4-0. Mackenzie McKay scored twice to lead the attack, and Colburn and Makenna Dick added one each. Taylor Lampman and Keith picked up assists, and the OV back line allowed only one shot on goal.

EAGLES
On Oct. 15 host Rice dealt Mount Abe its first loss, 3-2, in their final regular-season game.
Against the defending D-I champs, Eagle Txuxa Konczal scored and set up Olivia Campbell’s goal, and Eagle goalies Maddie Donaldson and Greta Jennison combined for seven stops. Three players scored for Rice, which rallied from a 2-1 second-half deficit, and goalie Theresa Strouse made six saves.

TIGERS
On Oct. 15 host Champlain Valley defeated MUHS, 4-0. The Tigers put one shot on goal, while Tiger goalie Cassie Bettis made 18 saves.
On Saturday Bettis stopped another 18 shots and the Tiger defense kept host Essex off the boards in the first half, but the Hornets scored three times after intermission to take the win. Hornet goalie Adowyn Byrne made one save.
