Football organization honors Tiger senior

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union High School senior Tyler Buxton was one of six seniors honored this month by the Vermont Chapter of the National Football Foundation as Vermont High School Scholar Athlete “Inductees” for their football talent, academic prowess and leadership.
The winners receive a $500 scholarship from the National Football Foundation, and their names are recorded in that organization’s archives.
Normally the inductees and other award winners are honored at the Vermont organization’s annual banquet, but that 27th annual yearly event was called off due to COVID-19 concerns.
The six winners were chosen from among a field of 24 finalists, all of whom were nominated by their coaches.
As well as Buxton, the winners were Trey Alercio of St. Johnsbury, Brett Bohlmann of South Burlington, Mitch Gadapee of Colchester, Joey McCoy from Burr and Burton and Tyler Millerick of Brattleboro.
Also nominated were Matthew Lazzaro of Mount Abraham Union and Andrew Lanthier of Fair Haven Union.
Buxton is a four-year member of the MUHS honor roll and a member of the MUHS Activities Council and School Spirit Committee. He also was a mentor in the Big Brother Program at Mary Hogan Elementary School.
Buxton was a two-time choice for the Division I coaches’ first team and two-time selection for the Burlington Free Press first team at running back. He played in the North-South Senior All-Star Game and has been selected for the Vermont Shrine Bowl Team.
Poultney Coach David Capman was named the Vermont Coach of the Year after leading his team to the D-III state title. Tom McCoy of D-I state champ Burr and Burton was named the coach of the year in Division-I, and Union-32’s Brian Divelbliss earned the D-II honor.
