Girls’ soccer: VUHS defeats Mt. Abe

ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes edged Mount Abraham on a late goal to provide the biggest highlight in recent high school girls’ soccer action. OV also picked up a win, and VUHS and Middlebury also earned ties. 
The Eagles also visited Middlebury on Friday; see story on Page 1B. 

COMMODORES
On Oct. 14 host VUHS edged Mount Abe, 1-0, when Sydney Weber netted the 77th-minute game-winner during a scramble following a corner kick. Kate Gosliga worked a three-save shutout for the Commodores, and Eagle keeper Joanna Toy stopped six shots. 
On Friday, visiting Spaulding topped VUHS, 2-1, on two Sage MacAuley scores. Goalie Rebecca McKelvey made five saves. Savannah Thomann scored for VUHS, and Gosliga made one save.
On Wednesday the Commodores (3-2-3) earned a 1-1 home tie with defending D-II champion Rice. Kaelin Sullivan netted the VUHS goal, from Hannah Kelly, and Gosliga made four saves. Sunshine Clark blocked three shots for Rice. 

EAGLES
On Monday visiting Spaulding improved to 4-1-1 with a 2-0 victory over Mount Abe. The Tide scored on either side of intermission and got four saves from McKelvey. Toy made seven saves as the Eagles took another close loss.
On Wednesday Milton topped the Eagles, 3-0. Toy stopped another seven shots as Mount Abe slipped to 1-7. 

OTTER VALLEY
On Saturday, host Springfield blanked OV, 2-0, despite eight saves from OV goalie Linnea Faulkner. OV Coach Tammi Blanchard said midfielder Emily Peduto played well. 
On Monday host Hartford outlasted the Otters, 2-1, despite a dozen Faulkner saves. Blanchard said the defense also held up well. Mia Politanoscored on a second-half free kick to cut the Hartford lead to one goal.
On Wednesday OV (4-4) edged visiting Mount St. Joseph, 4-3, as Mia Politano scored three times and set up sister Elena Politano’s strike.   

TIGERS
Host Rice topped the Tigers on Oct. 14, 4-0, despite a combined 13 saves from MUHS goalies Audrey Schnoor (10) and Julia Bartlett (three). 
On Wednesday the 1-4-2 Tigers tied visiting Spaulding 2-2. Hannah Turner, from Zoe Noble, and Elisabeth Crawford, assisted by Sophie Larocque, scored for MUHS, and Schnoor stopped nine shots. McKelvey made six saves for the Tide.
