Men’s soccer team ties one, loses one

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team concluded its regular season with a road loss and a home tie in recent action.
The Panthers (7-2-6, 3-2-5 NESCAC) earned the No. 6 seed for the league playoffs and will open on the road on Saturday vs. third-seeded Connecticut (10-3-2, 6-2-2 NESCAC).
On this past Saturday host Tufts (10-2-2, 6-1-2 NESCAC) topped the Panthers in overtime, 2-1. Jumbo Joe Braun knocked in a corner kick in overtime for the game-winner.
After a scoreless first half, Middlebury went on top in the 13th minute of the second half when Drew Goulart netted a free kick from 23 yards out on the left side. The goal was his team-high fourth.
Panther goalie Ryan Grady dove to his left to deny a Tufts penalty kick with 13 minutes left in regulation, but four minutes later Gavin Tasker one-touched home a Braun header to tie the game. In the game’s 84th minute Grady (six saves) saved two Tufts scoring bids and the Jumbos missed the frame on a penalty kick.
Middlebury had a chance with less than three minutes remaining, but a Tufts defender blocked a 15-yard Brandon Reid bid.
Tufts outshot the Panthers, 21-10, and Jumbo goalie Will Harned made two saves.
On Tuesday Middlebury and NESCAC foe Williams (7-3-5, 5-2-3) played to a 1-1 tie.
The Ephs took the lead about 10 minutes into the second half, when Andrew Mathew tucked a 40-yard, wind-aided free kick under the crossbar. The Panthers leveled the score at 1-1 in the 64th minute on a goal from Brendan Barry, who headed in a Michael McFarlane cross from the left side at 63:54.
Grady made nine saves as the Ephs outshot the Panthers, 14-7, while Michael Davis had a pair of stops for Williams.
