Tiger football thumps CVU, 45-7

HINESBURG — The Middlebury Union High School football team coasted past overmatched host Champlain Valley on Saturday, 45-7, to remain undefeated at 6-0. The Redhawks fell to 2-4.
The Tigers and St. Johnsbury, which defeated host Burr & Burton, 50-38, on Friday, are the only remaining unbeaten Division I teams. St. Johnsbury is in first place based on quality points and will almost certainly earn the top seed in the playoffs unless the Hilltoppers are upset in their final two games.
MUHS will face what will probably be its toughest remaining test this Friday night, when the Tigers visit fourth-place Rutland (5-1). The Raiders defeated BFA-St. Albans (3-3) on this past Friday, 35-13. The Tigers will conclude their regular season by hosting BFA on Oct. 18. They can nail down at least the No. 2 seed by winning both their remaining games.
On this past Saturday the Tigers bolted to a 28-0 lead after one period and eased home from there. Ian Ploof (four carries for 92 yards, including a long touchdown run) and Gabe Dunn (11 carries, 85 yards and a scoring run) led the attack.
Quarterback Tim Goettelmann rushed for an early 9-yard score and tossed a TD pass to Tyler Buxton, and Buxton also scored on a short run. Nikolai Luksch nailed a 28-yard field goal and went six-for-six on points-after, and Ploof and Jack Rizzo intercepted passes. CVU QB Max Destito tossed a 4-yard TD pass to Angelos Carroll to account for the Redhawk score.
