MONTPELIER — No. 3 Montpelier defeated the visiting No. 6 Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team, 72-59, in a Division II quarterfinal. The Solons improved to 18-3, while the Tigers completed another winning season at 12-10.   Jonah Cattaneo led Montpelier with 26 points, and Ben Gambill added 15 points.  Tyler Buxton excelled in his last game for the Tigers with 21 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and three assists. RANDOLPH —  On Wednesday No. 2 Randolph (14-7) eliminated the No. 15 Vergennes Union High School boys’ basketball team from the Division III playoffs, 71-38, in a first-round game. Wyatt Messier sparked the Ghosts with 17 points and 12 rebounds.  Despite the efforts of seniors Kevin Jackson (13 points) and Luke Bergmans (12), the Commodores finished 0-21.

RIPTON/JERICHO — Defending champion U-32 overcame a first-day relay-race disqualification and rallied on Monday past the Middlebury Union High School girls’ Nordic team to top the Tigers for the Division II state title, 132-153. The Raiders and Tigers outclassed the eight-team field in classic racing held on Feb. 20 at Ripton’s Rikert Nordic Center and freestyle racing at the Ethan Allen Range in Jericho on Monday. RIPTON AND JERICHO — Over the two days of the Division II boys’ Nordic state championship, the margin between winner U-32 and second place Middlebury Union High School came down to less than one place per skier in the individual races — seven points. When the snow settled after the freestyle competition at Camp Ethan Allen in Jericho on Monday afternoon the Raiders had claimed their second straight D-II title, 72-79 over the Tigers. MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team celebrated its senior night on Tuesday by defeating visiting South Burlington, 3-2, before the season’s biggest crowd at the Memorial Sports Center. The victory moved the Tigers to 11-9 heading into the Division I playoffs, and they have earned the No. 6 seed for the upcoming postseason. The Vermont Principals’ Association is set to make pairings official on Thursday morning. ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball action earlier this week, Middlebury, Vergennes and Mount Abraham all picked up victories. Otter Valley (7-11) was scheduled to play at Springfield on Tuesday. No information was available on that game. OV will wrap up by hosting Woodstock on Thursday, and it looks like the Otters will be the No. 10 seed in Division III. NEWPORT — In first-round high school boys’ basketball playoff action this week, Middlebury advanced, but Mount Abraham and Vergennes were eliminated. The Tigers, seeded No. 6 in Division II, ousted No. 11 Lamoille, 66-58 on Wednesday. The 10-11 Lancers erased the Tigers’ 35-26 halftime advantage to take a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, but Coach John Howe said “strong defense and a few heads-up plays” allowed the Tigers to prevail. MONTPELIER — The Vermont Principals’ Association’s 2020 Hall of Fame class includes three members with strong local ties: longtime Middlebury Union High School soccer and baseball coach and teacher Richard “Doc” Seubert, former Otter Valley Union debate team advisor David Gale and former Middlebury College basketball standout and Missisquoi Valley Union three-sport star Matt St. Amour. BRUNSWICK, Maine — The Middlebury College women’s ice hockey team completed its regular season this past Friday and Saturday by sweeping host Bowdoin to finish with a 19-2-3 record, 14-1-1 in NESCAC play. The Panthers earned the top seed for the NESCAC tournament and on Saturday at 1 p.m. will host No. 8 Trinity (8-12-4, 3-11-2 NESCAC).
