VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team on Tuesday rolled to an 8-0 victory over visiting Randolph in the season opener for both teams. Senior midfielder Emily Rooney led the Commodores’ attack with four goals, and a rebuilt VUHS defense did not allow a shot on goalie Kate Gosliga. Four other Commodores scored. Felicia Poirier scored and assisted a Rooney goal, and Rhode Miguel, Hannah Kelly and Ali Croke also found the net. NORTHFIELD — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team debuted on Tuesday by blanking host Norwich, 2-0, in a non-league contest. The Panthers will visit Wesleyan on Saturday in their first NESCAC game. The Panthers scored a goal in each half and held the Cadets (2-1) without an official shot on goalie Ryan Grady, although Norwich hit the crossbar on a late penalty kick. ADDISON COUNTY — When overnight temperatures in the Champlain Valley dip into the 50s it’s a sure sign that another year of high school sports is here. By the middle of next week, every Middlebury, Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Otter Valley union high school cross-country, field hockey, football, golf and soccer teams will take to a field or course in regular-season action. WEST HAVEN — Four local drivers were among the 11 winners on Sunday in a busy night of Devil’s Bowl’s dirt-track racing. Double features were held for all five weekly divisions along with a 50-lap Enduro Series race. Local drivers picking up victories were Salisbury’s Brent Warren, Brandon’s Matt Bilodeau and Kevin Smith, and Middlebury’s Jake Barrows. Warren scored his career-first Sportsman Modified victory in a 20-lap feature. The Addison Independent All-Star Teams have had a good run over the past two decades. Well, at least I think they’ve been fun and informative. And a few readers have said they agreed, although others have certainly complained about omissions, not only of players, but also of entire sports. But the time has come for the Sports Section to move in a different direction. It’s not the All-Star Teams, it’s me. Well, OK, it’s them. MIDDLEBURY — This past weekend Team Ralph Myhre Golf Course edged its counterpart from Basin Harbor to claim the 2019 Addison Cup in the Annual Club Challenge. The final score in matches played on Saturday and Sunday was Ralph Myhre 9.5, Basin Harbor 6.5. This coming Saturday and Sunday Ralph Myhre will be hosting its annual club championships, including women’s, men’s, senior and junior divisions.
