MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team swept two visiting league foes on the final weekend of the regular season to claim the No. 4 seed for the NESCAC playoffs. The Panthers (10-11-3, 8-7-3) at 4 p.m. on Saturday will host No. 5 seed Wesleyan (12-11-1, 8-9-1 NESCAC). It will be the program’s first home playoff game since 2014. Middlebury recently won at Wesleyan, 4-1, while earlier the Cardinals won at Kenyon Arena, 3-1. HARTFORD — Fourth-seeded Trinity on Saturday eliminated the No. 5 Middlebury College men’s basketball team from the NESCAC tournament, 100-82. The 20-5 Panthers, who have spent much of the season ranked in the top 10 in NCAA Division III polls and are undefeated in non-league competition, will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament when the field is announced this coming Monday afternoon. VERGENNES — Vergennes Union High School junior forward Kate Gosliga was most excited to talk about one thing after the Commodore girls’ basketball team defeated visiting Missisquoi on Thursday, 56-37. “We really want a home playoff game,” Gosliga said. “It would be so awesome. We’re so excited. Oh, my goodness.” On Saturday the Commodores took a step closer to that goal by defeating host Richford, 43-38. ADDISON COUNTY — In the final regular season local boys’ basketball games last week, Middlebury, Mount Abraham, Vergennes and Otter Valley all finished on losing notes. The Vermont Principals Association was set to release playoff pairings early on Monday, with first-round games scheduled for this Tuesday and Wednesday and quarterfinals this coming weekend. MIDDLEBURY — The Tier II Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team wrapped up its regular season on Friday with a 5-2 victory over visiting Tier I team Rice. The Tigers went 5-1-1 in their final seven games to enter the playoff with a 12-6-2 record. Depending on how Tier II competitor Harwood (12-5-1) fares in its home stretch the Tigers will finished in either first or second place in Tier II. ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school girls’ basketball action late last week, Mount Abraham stretched its winning streak by prevailing at home, Otter Valley picked up two victories, and Middlebury lost on the road. ESSEX — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team won one of two road games last week. The 10-9 Tigers will wrap up their regular season by hosting South Burlington on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Vermont Principals Association will announce playoff seeds on Thursday. It appears the Tigers will be seeded either No. 5 or 6 and face either No. 4 Stowe or No. 3 Rice in a quarterfinal early next week.
