WEST HAVEN — Justin Stone added a piece to his family’s motorsports history on Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. The third-generation Middlebury driver picked up his first Sportsman Modified victory at the annual Brown’s Quarried Slate/Brown’s Orchard & Farm Stand Night event. The night’s highlights also included a feature win by Chuck Bradford of Addison. Stone was the star, but only in the final 10 circuits of the 30-lap main event. Bristol’s Josh Masterson, who had suffered through three straight races with electrical problems, started on the pole position and led the first 20 laps in...

Hell’s Canyon. With 8,000 feet of elevation difference between river level and the highest peaks of the enclosing ridgelines, it’s the deepest river gorge in North America — even deeper (and wider at the brim) than the Grand Canyon. It’s also the terminus of the Salmon River, the longest undammed river in the Lower 48. Cutting through the heart of this majestic and awe-inspiring canyon is the Snake River. After leaving Wyoming, where it has gathered waters from the mountains of Grand Teton National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest, the Snake briefly turns northwest and picks up...

ADDISON COUNTY — There were titles won — notably by two Vergennes senior runners — but the best part of the 2021 high school sports spring season was, well, that there was a season. The spreading COVID-19 pandemic wiped out high school sports in spring 2020, but starting in mid-April this year, high school athletes hit homers, struck out batters, saved shots, flung discuses and Frisbees, ran races and passed batons, and struck volleys for winners. OK, let’s be real: Sometimes they struck out with the bases loaded, booted grounders, shot wide and missed catches, dropped Frisbees or batons, and...
WESTMINSTER — A big inning in each game in a Friday doubleheader propelled the North to a doubleheader sweep of the South in the 2021 Vermont Baseball Coaches Association North-South Senior Classic Friday night at Bellows Falls Union High’s Hadley Field. The North won the opener, 11-3, and the second game, 12-1. In the opener, the North scored two in the first, six in the second, two in the third, and one in the fourth. Justis Orton of Enosburg and Shreyas Parikh of Mount Mansfield each hit a pair of RBI singles, and doubles by Ryan Eaton of Champlain Valley, and Spaulding’s Zack Stabell and...

HANOVER, N.H. — Despite the efforts of 10 local senior high school lacrosse athletes selected for the matches, New Hampshire senior lacrosse all-stars swept their Vermont counterparts in Saturday’s Byrne Cup Twin State All-Star Lacrosse Games. The New Hampshire boys prevailed, 15-10, and the Granite State girls won, 19-5. A major reason the boys’ game was closer was the work of Middlebury Union goalie Jack Rizzo, who made 28 saves for Vermont and was awarded a game ball by Coach Ryan Fitzpatrick of Colchester. Essex midfielder Christopher Davis, who scored twice, also earned a game ball....

WEST HAVEN — Ripton’s Chris Sumner and Orwell’s Ray Hanson won undercard races at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday night, while Queensbury, N.Y., driver Demetrios Drellos prevailed in the dirt track’s 30-lap Sportsman Modified main even. Drellos came from 21st starting position in the annual Father's Day Topless Special (cars racing without roofs) to stalk leader Adam Pierson of East Corinth in the final laps. Drellos threw a slide-job move on Pierson coming to the white flag to take the lead and then drove off in the final lap for his fourth win of 2021. Pierson finished a season-best...
