MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team swept two games last week to improve to 7-3.
The Tigers are on the road this week at Burlington-Colchester on Wednesday and Woodstock on Saturday.
On this past Wednesday the Tigers scored late to snap a 1-1 tie and defeat host Burr and Burton, 3-1. Bella Gale broke the deadlock with 3:30 remaining and added a pad goal 29 seconds later. Audrey Schnoor scored the first MUHS goal earlier in the third period, and goalie Lydia Deppman made 20 saves. Stella Turner scored for BBA, and goalie Lola Herzog made 45 saves.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team on Saturday picked up its fourth win in five outings, 3-1 over visiting Colchester. The 5-4 Tigers will host Essex (5-1-1) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Tigers took a 2-0 first-period lead on power-play goals by Bode Rubright, assisted by Ryan Nadeau, and Andy Giorgio, set up by Hale Hescock and Robbie Bicknell.
Colchester’s Jake Corman made it 2-1 at 12:17 of the second period, but with 16 seconds left in the period Daniel Hodsden netted an insurance goal, from Rubright.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ basketball team split a pair of games late last week and stood at 5-4 entering play this week.
On Wednesday undefeated Fair Haven outlasted the Tigers, 44-41. In a back-and-forth game, the Tigers took a three-point lead entering the fourth period after a 26-26 halftime tie, but the 10-0 Slaters earned the six-point edge in the fourth.
Kohlby Murray (13 points) led Fair Haven, followed by Joey Gannon with 11.
Mason Kaufmann and Tyler Buxton paced the Tigers with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team bounced back from its first loss — on the road this past Friday — to win a pair of games, one in dramatic fashion on Saturday and another with a strong defensive performance at home on Tuesday.
All three games came against tough competition. Middlebury lost at Amherst, No. 22 in NCAA Division III, on Friday, 81-69; edged host Hamilton (a team with an 11-3 record) on Saturday, 77-76; and defeated visiting No. 18 Albertus Magnus, 84-76 on Tuesday.

CHITTENDEN COUNTY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ Nordic ski team on Monday clinched the annual three-stage Tour de Chittenden race, edging Division II rival U-32, 28-34.

Whenever I go to a Lake Monsters game in Burlington, I find an occasion to declare casually to my companions that I played at historic Centennial Field for the Middlebury College nine, many years ago.

MIDDLEBURY — The Vermont Brew professional arena league football team, which will be playing its home games at Middlebury’s Memorial Sports Center starting this spring, will be holding tryouts on Feb. 8.
The tryouts will be held at Middlebury College’s Virtue Fieldhouse, beginning at 9 a.m. with a check-in time of 8:30 a.m. There is a charge to register of $50 if registration is completed on or before Jan. 25 and $65 after that date.
