WEST HAVEN — Devil’s Bowl Speedway will open its 55th season this Saturday at 7 p.m., with Mike’s Fuels of Bridport sponsoring the dirt-track racing. The West Haven track will offer racing in five divisions, including the headline Sportsman Modified class, which will offer a $2,500 winner’s purse on opening night. That feature event has been extended from 30 laps to 32 to honor the car number of Brandon driver Matt Bilodeau, who died in early April. Reigning division champion Demetrios Drellos of Queensbury, N.Y., will return for opening night, and he will be one of many drivers honored...

MIDDLEBURY — Saturday’s softball game between host Middlebury and Vergennes started as if it would be a close affair, with the score tied at 1-1 entering the bottom of the third inning between two teams with high hopes for the spring. But that’s when things started going awry for the Commodores, who took their first loss after a big opening win. In the home third the Tigers used singles by Taylor Betourney, Olivia Audet and Aby Stafford; four walks; three wild pitches; a passed ball; and four stolen bases to score five times and take a 6-1 lead. The Tigers would use timely hitting and more...

The Eagles’ Thursday home games vs. Otter Valley were postponed to a later date. MUHS softball also hosted VUHS on Saturday; click here to to see the story. VERGENNES — The coaches and players of the Vergennes-Mount Abraham girls’ high school lacrosse team say the group has a lot to work on, and they’re probably right. For example, Coach Marikate Kelley and senior center mid Hannah Kelly said after Tuesday’s home win vs. Lamoille that the Commodores’ transition game could be cleaner, communication on defense could be more effective, and offensive execution could be crisper. But tell that to Lamoille, who came up on the short end of a 14-1 score even though because of spring break the Commodores were missing starting goalie Ashley Tierney;...

ADDISON COUNTY — The Vergennes and Middlebury union high school softball teams won their openers on Tuesday, but Otter Valley dropped its debut on the road to rival Fair Haven. Defending Division II champion Mount Abraham was set to open on Saturday by hosting Missisquoi, but that game was postponed twice, first to Wednesday and then to this Friday. The Eagles will instead debut on Thursday, weather permitting, at home vs. OV. COMMODORES The Commodores had also been scheduled to visit Lake Region on Saturday, but that game was called off. Instead, they opened on Tuesday by defeating...
