It was late morning. The fog drifting along the lake surface had mostly burned away, though a few patches still clung to the steep slopes. Replacing the fog was an eerie yellowish haze. The haze filled the bowl formed by the lines of rugged wilderness mountains that enclosed us on three sides. It took me some time — and a few deep breaths through my nostrils, picking up its particular smell — to realize that it was smoke from one (or more) of the numerous wildfires burning across parts of Alaska, the closest of which was only about 40 miles away.

ESSEX — In a major early high-school cross-country meet that drew many Division I teams, the D-II Middlebury boys’ and girls’ teams settled for mid-pack finishes in this past Saturday’s Essex Invitational.
The Tiger boys were seventh out of 14 teams, and the MUHS girls were sixth out of 12. Freshman Luke Klingensmith finished 25th to lead the MUHS boys’ team, and senior Isabel Olson took 30th to lead the Tiger girls.

BRISTOL — Visiting Oxbow defeated the Mount Abraham-Vergennes cooperative football team, 33-14, on Saturday, in the Division II opener for both high school programs.
Oxbow running back Jace Page and quarterback Cooper Simmons combined to score or throw for all five Oxbow touchdowns. Simmons set the tone early by tossing an 80-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Locke on the game’s first play from scrimmage.
Eagle sophomore quarterback Adam Mansfield amassed 220 yards passing in the setback. Many of those yards came on throws to sophomore Carmelo Miceli, who totaled 165 yards receiving.
MIDDLEBURY — This past weekend’s Ralph Myhre Golf Course’s Men’s Club Championship tournament produced four winners.
Hogan Beazley was the Gross Score Championship Flight Winner, and Joe Bartlett was the Gross Score Senior Flight Winner.
Don Kenney and Jim Johnston tied as the Net Score Championship Winners.
In regular weekly action, the team of Bill Brown, Beazley and John Myhre prevailed in Thursday Bill Davidson Men’s Golf on Aug. 29, with the threesome of Mike Adams, Mike Davis and Pete Damone in second. Steve Maier shot the day’s best net score.

BRANDON — Visiting Poultney dealt the Otter Valley Union High School football team a 40-20 setback on Saturday in the Division III season opener for both programs.
Blue Devil running back Levi Allen powered Poultney with five touchdowns, four on the ground from 1, 3, 47 and 51 yards out, and one through the air on a 40-yard toss from quarterback Caden Chapman. That catch snapped a 6-6 tie late in the first half.
Allen ran for 234 yards in 14 carries, and Poultney also recovered a fumble in the OV end zone to make it 21-6 in the third quarter.

Otter Valley’s opener at Brattleboro on Saturday was postponed. OV will instead debut at Brattleboro on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
On Aug. 30 the Eagles edged host U-32, 3-2. Mount Abe forwards Emma Fay, Molly Laurent and Txuxa Konczal knocked in a goal apiece, and Fay set up one score. Mount Abe will visit MUHS on Thursday afternoon.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team on Tuesday rolled to an 8-0 victory over visiting Randolph in the season opener for both teams.
Senior midfielder Emily Rooney led the Commodores’ attack with four goals, and a rebuilt VUHS defense did not allow a shot on goalie Kate Gosliga.

NORTHFIELD — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team debuted on Tuesday by blanking host Norwich, 2-0, in a non-league contest.
The Panthers will visit Wesleyan on Saturday in their first NESCAC game.
