BRANDON — The top-seeded Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team turned aside visiting No. 8 St. Johnsbury, 2-0, in a Division II quarterfinal. The Otters improved to 12-2 and will take on No. 4 Burr & Burton in a Wednesday semifinal. That game will be played at 5:15 p.m. on South Burlington’s turf field. The 9-6 Bulldogs should pose a challenge: They reached the 2018 final, defeated OV in overtime in Brandon this season, and also play their home games on a turf surface. MIDDLEBURY — The host No. 2 Middlebury Union High School football team turned back stubborn No. 4 BFA-St. Albans, 9-0, in a Division I quarterfinal on a wet Friday night. The Tigers improved to 9-0 and will host No. 3 Burr & Burton (8-1) this Friday at 7 p.m., while the Bobwhites dropped to 4-5. VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team, seeded No. 2 in Division II, had a little bit of trouble putting the ball in the net against visiting No. 15 Bellows Falls on Tuesday, but overall had little trouble with the 2-13 Terriers: VUHS outshot them by 39-0 in a 2-0 victory. ADDISON COUNTY — As the Division II high school field hockey playoffs opened on Tuesday, No. 2 Middlebury turned back No. 10 Brattleboro, 3-1, in a first-round game. Meanwhile, as expected, the 11-2 Otter Valley and 9-3-2 Mount Abraham teams earned D-II’s Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively. The defending champion Eagles will now host the Tigers at 3:30 p.m. on this Thursday in a quarterfinal. ST. ALBANS — The Middlebury Union High School girls and the Vergennes boys posted the best local results at Saturday’s NVAC Championship meet, which brought together 13 girls’ and 15 boys’ teams from all three divisions at the Hard‘ack Recreation Area in St. Albans. The Tiger girls, led by Isabel Olson in 15th, took fifth among the girls’ teams with 156 points. Champlain Valley (22) prevailed, with Essex (55) in second. ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury and Mount Abraham boys’ soccer teams both won first-round Division II playoff games on Tuesday to set up a second-round head-to-head matchup, Vergennes cruised in its Wednesday D-III opener, while Otter Valley’s D-III upset bid on Tuesday came up just short. MIDDLEBURY — In a Saturday battle for first place between the only unbeaten NESCAC football teams, Middlebury College picked up an emphatic 45-21 win over visiting Wesleyan. The Panthers improved to 6-0, with Wesleyan and Williams tied for second at 5-1. The Panthers have already defeated both of those teams, and they do not face a team the rest of the way with a better than 3-3 record. They visit winless Bowdoin this Saturday, and Tufts and Hamilton, both currently 3-3, follow on Middlebury’s docket. FAIRFAX — The Otter Valley Union High School football team upset previously unbeaten Fairfax on Saturday night, 38-36, to finish the regular season at 5-3 and earn the No. 3 seed in Division III. The Otters will host No. 6 Oxbow on Saturday at 1 p.m. In a seesaw game at Fairfax (7-1), the Otters took the lead for good in the final minute, when quarterback Alex Polli tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Chance Passmore. MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team blanked NESCAC foe Trinity on Saturday, 3-0, to improve to 7-1-5, 3-1-4 in league play. The Bantams dropped to 1-11, 0-8 NESCAC. Middlebury will wrap up regular season play by visiting Tufts on Saturday and hosting Williams at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
