CHESTER — Host No. 4 Green Mountain Union on Friday, Oct. 25, outlasted the Vergennes Union High School boys’ soccer team, 2-1, in a Division III quarterfinal. The loss snapped the Commodores’ four-game winning streak, during which they had outscored their opposition, 25-0. Coach Kevin Hayes said they had opportunities in a game in which they earned a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. “We did not capitalize on some great chances,” Hayes said. Jonah Mahé scored for VUHS, assisted by Jonathan Willis. Everett Mosher and James Anderson each recorded a goal and an assist for GMU (11-5). Anderson’s goal...

Standing on a rocky shore beneath the shadow of a massive dam, I drifted small nymphs in slow-moving water that looked chest deep. A couple fish rose sporadically some distance upriver, mostly against the wooded bank on the far shore. One trout with a scarred back cruised past and disappeared downstream. Nothing showed interest in my fly. After an hour, Brandon Jackson, my guide from Riverside Fly Shop, moved us downriver, around the next bend and out of sight of the dam. The river was much shallower here, flowing swiftly over riffles and through thigh-deep pools. To me, it looked much...

BRISTOL — The defending Division II champion Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey team on Thursday cleared its first playoff hurdle, but visiting No. 7 Middlebury set the bar high for the No. 2 Eagles. Ultimately, the Eagles created more pressure that translated into 23 penalty corners, and two of them paid off with Molly Laurent and Sydney Perlee goals as they came away with a 2-0 victory. The veteran Eagle defense of Maizy Shepard in the middle and Camille Lyons on the flanks also excelled in disrupting the Tigers’ transition attack as Mount Abe (9-3-2) posted its third shutout in...

MIDDLEBURY — Friday’s Division II high school boys’ soccer quarterfinal saw No. 2 Middlebury host No. 10 Mount Abraham in the fall’s third meeting of the two teams. Like the first two times, the 13-3 Tigers prevailed, this time by 3-0. But it wasn’t easy against the 9-5-2 Eagles, who battled MUHS to a scoreless first-half stalemate. Statistically, Mount Abe had a slight edge in the first half: Shots (four apiece) and saves (one each) were even, while the Eagles earned more corners (3-1). But the ball rolled the Tigers’ way after the break. Pressure keyed by the Tiger midfield led to goals by...

VERGENNES — The No. 2 Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team dismissed visiting No. 10 Windsor, 6-1, in a Division III quarterfinal on Wednesday. The Commodores improved to 10-4-1 with the win over the 8-7-1 Jacks and will next host No. 3 Leland & Gray (14-2) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. VUHS did not meet Leland & Gray this season, but L&G twice faced Windsor, defeating the Jacks both times, 3-1. L&G also twice played the Commodores’ first-round playoff foe, Bellows Falls, defeating the Terriers by 10-0 at home and 2-0 on the road. The Commodores outshot the Terriers by 39-0...
BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer team began this season talking of realistic hopes of winning the Division II championship. The group included 10 seniors, many who helped the Eagles reach semifinals in 2017 and 2018. But the dream didn’t come true: On Saturday No. 7 seed Harwood (8-5) cashed in on its chances and upset the host No. 2 Eagles, 3-1, in a quarterfinal. The 13-4 Eagles outshot the Highlanders, 15-7, but Harwood scored twice on just three second-half shots to snap a 1-1 tie. Coach Dustin Corrigan afterward told a tale as old as soccer about certain...
BRANDON — The top-seeded Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team turned aside visiting No. 8 St. Johnsbury, 2-0, in a Division II quarterfinal. The Otters improved to 12-2 and will take on No. 4 Burr & Burton in a Wednesday semifinal. That game will be played at 5:15 p.m. on South Burlington’s turf field. The 9-6 Bulldogs should pose a challenge: They reached the 2018 final, defeated OV in overtime in Brandon this season, and also play their home games on a turf surface. St. Johnsbury (7-5-3) did not pose too tough a test for the Otters. The OV defense limited the Hilltoppers to...
