SPRINGFIELD — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team cruised past host Springfield on Saturday, 5-1, as Alia Edmunds racked up four goals. Riley Keith also scored as the Otters improved to 4-1, and Morgan LaPorte and Livia Bernhardt picked up assists. Hannah Presch scored for the Cosmos, who received 16 saves from goalie Anna Church. OV goalie Ellie Ross made one save. The Division II Otters will host D-III title contender Windsor on Wednesday.

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school soccer games, all played this past Friday, Mount Abraham and Vergennes picked up wins, Otter Valley earned a tie, and MUHS lost a close contest. EAGLES The Eagles rolled over visiting Spaulding, 5-0. Juliette Snell scored twice; Lucy Guy, Grace Harvey and Jessica Colbeth added a goal apiece; Mae Peterson contributed two assists; and goalie Justice Green made three saves as the Eagles improved to 4-1. ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham rallied past visiting Vergennes to highlight local boys’ soccer play in the latter half of last week. In other action the Commodores lost another road contest, Middlebury split two games, and Otter Valley lost two one-goal games. MIDDLEBURY — For one of the two high school field hockey teams playing at Middlebury Union High School on Tuesday the game proved to be a showcase of its potential.  For the other it was just one of those days. The happier outfit was visiting Otter Valley, which erupted for six goals in the second half in a 7-0 victory. The Otters improved to 3-1, with their only loss coming to 2018 Division II finalist Burr & Burton in overtime in a game in which they outshot BBA by 24-11. RANDOLPH CENTER — The Vergennes boys and Middlebury girls fared best on Saturday at the Randolph High School Invitational Cross Country Meet, hosted by Randolph at Vermont Technical College. Athletes had to contend with cool, damp and breezy conditions, with a light drizzle throughout both races.  The VUHS boys, led by Ben Huston’s sixth-place effort out of 174 competitors, finished fourth with 129 points. MIDDLEBURY — The Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team defeated host Middlebury on Tuesday, 2-0.  The Division III Commodores improved to 3-1-1 and will visit defending D-II champion Milton on Friday. MUHS dropped to 2-2 and will host Rice on Friday.  VUHS got on the board on an Emily Rooney goal set up when Maria Malaney picked off an errant Tiger clearance. BRISTOL — Two members of the Sodbusters Horseshoe Pitching Club earned titles when the group hosted its annual Sodbusters Fall Roundup Tournament on Sunday, Sept. 15. Dawn Coleman won Class C, where she scored 226 points with a 43.23 ringer percentage. In Class D, Mistylee Baird claimed the title with 249 points and pitched ringers 40.88 percent of the time. Both achieved 6-1 records against the competition.  The winner of the Class A division was Massachusetts pitcher Shelly Martinez, who went 7-0, tallied 254 points and posted a ringer percentage of 70.96. SOUTH BURLINGTON — Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ soccer picked up a big road win on Tuesday, topping host Rice, a 2018 Division II finalist, 4-1.  The Eagles improved to 3-1 and will host Spaulding on Friday. Becca Laurent and Addy Harris scored two goals apiece to spark the Eagles, who had a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal.  Emma Blanck scored for Rice, and goalie Emily McDonald stopped 10 shots.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School field hockey squad on Tuesday remained unbeaten by defeating previously undefeated South Burlington, 2-1, in overtime.  The Eagles improved to 3-0-2 and will host Middlebury on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Wolves dropped to 4-1.  Emma Fay scored in overtime to give the Eagles the victory. It was her second goal of the game. Mount Abe goalie Kira Murray backstopped the victory with seven saves.  Lindsey Booth scored for SBHS, and goalie Ainsley Hultgren was credited with 19 saves.
