MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College football team opened its season this past Saturday with a dramatic last-minute victory over visiting Williams, 17-13. The Panthers will visit Bates this Saturday.  Late in Saturday’s fourth quarter, the Panther defense held on a Williams drive that began at the Middlebury 44. A short Eph punt put the Panthers on their own 22 with 2:31 remaining.  Panther quarterback Will Jernigan completed two quick passes to Aidan Power and then ran 15 yards to the Williams 40-yard line. Jernigan found Maxim Bochman for a dozen yards before hitting Maxwell Rye, who made a...

It began as just some light-hearted Sunday afternoon relaxation and enjoyment. It ended in the painful crush of defeat. OK, actually the defeat wasn’t that painful or crushing. In fact, it was about as relaxing and light-hearted as the rest of the afternoon. And I’m tempted to say it wasn’t even a defeat. I came in second place. When I pointed that out at the dinner table, my son Mark replied that coming in second is just another way of losing; “The second place finish is just the first loser,” he said. I think he only holds that view because he is a baseball player. The activity was the...

BRISTOL — In a Friday game not decided until the final horn the Division III Otter Valley Union High School football team left Bristol with a 27-18 victory over D-II Mount Abraham-Vergennes. In the fourth quarter Eagles twice stopped the Otters, who were up by 21-18 and threatening to ice a victory, deep in Eagle territory. And Mount Abe was driving toward a potential tying or go-ahead score when a holding call nullified a gain that would have put them within the range of sophomore kicker/quarterback Adam Mansfield. But they still had a chance before OV sophomore safety Brady Diaz stepped in...
