My wife Deborah and I stood in shorts and t-shirts on a wildlife viewing platform in the midst of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge near Gulf Shores, Ala. The platform roof shielded us from the heat of mid-afternoon sun on an October day with temps in the 80s, but allowed a refreshing salt breeze to blow across us. A kilometer to our south, fine white sand beaches stretched out of sight in both directions along the Gulf of Mexico, and pelicans sailed low over the waves, occasionally dropping into the water for a snack. Believe the hype.
That’s what most people say after watching Olivia White play soccer.
White, 17, is the only Otter Valley Union High School student to be offered a full ride to the University of Vermont on an athletic scholarship. In any sport, boy or girl.
White announced her decision to play soccer for UVM at a press conference on Nov. 13. The news came two years after White verbally committed to the school as a sophomore and was courted by the likes of Middlebury, Princeton, Ohio State and Northeastern.
So, after years of being a standout player on every team she’s been on, and being...
ADDISON COUNTY — Due to an apparent computer glitch at New Haven wildlife reporting station Rack ’N Reel, more than two-dozen successful bow hunters were not initially reported to the Addison Independent in early November.
The exclusions do not appear to be operator error: The dates of the missing deer range from the Oct. 5 opening day of the archery season through Oct. 26, close to its Nov. 1 conclusion, and weights range from a fawn to the largest deer reported in the county during the season, a 199-pound, 7-pointer Paul Deering brought down in Bridport and brought to Rack ’N Reel on Oct....

Three Otters earned First Team D-III honors. Jared Denis was recognized as both an offensive and defensive lineman...
MONTPELIER — On Jan. 1, 2020, new baitfish regulations will go into effect aimed at providing anglers with additional opportunities to use and harvest baitfish.
“We spent the last two years listening to the public and working with the Fish and Wildlife Board to improve regulations while limiting the spread of fish diseases and invasive species,” said Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department Fisheries Biologist Shawn Good. “I think anglers will be pleasantly surprised by these new regulations.”
Some changes include:
• Baitfish transportation receipts will be valid for 10 days instead of 4 days...
