THE MAIN FLOOR of the proposed new Monkton Town Hall and library would include municipal offices, a vault, and a community meeting room, among other amenities.

MONKTON — There’s something charming about the off-balance way that essential stuff persists, stack by stack, in the institutional beige corners of the Monkton Town Office. Red, white and blue binders live on top of copy paper boxes with split cardboard lids. Manila envelopes bow forward from wall-mounted in-boxes. Tiny labels with faded print provide a kind of popcorn trail through a labyrinth of information and records. The offices have that “loved” look. Across the street, the Russell Memorial Library, in its polished, make-do way, feels drawn from a Victorian novel — the living room of...

In regards to the Orwell Town Hall: The town would be best served if the people in Orwell chose to own the Town Hall, not the school or the Slate Valley School District. Let the townspeople make the very important decisions as to fix the hall up to standards or build new. Basically, the building is very salvageable. The framework is very sound. It needs a new kitchen, bathroom and a more convenient entrance for senior citizens. Walker E. James Orwell

THE ORWELL TOWN Hall could be demolished to make way for a cafeteria/gym addition to the adjacent Orwell Village School. That project is part of a $60 million capital improvement bond for the SVUUSD that includes major upgrades to Fair Haven Union High School and a new middle school in Fair Haven. It is, however, an important asset to the town of Orwell, serving as it has for over 150 years as the center of town activities, the location of Orwell Town Meeting, and numerous other community functions that rely on...

ORWELL — Residents of the six towns in the Slate Valley Unified Union School District (SVUUSD) will vote as soon as this coming spring on a massive, $60 million capital improvements bond issue that would, among other things, pay for a new 8,200-square-foot addition for the Orwell Village School. Recommendations of the SVUUSD Innovation Committee call for construction of a new middle school in Fair Haven and major upgrades to both Orwell Village School and Fair Haven Union High School. The SVUUSD serves children in Orwell, Castleton, Benson, Hubbardton, West Haven and Fair Haven. Orwell merged...
