Vergennes

VERGENNES — The race on Tuesday for Vergennes mayor between two-term incumbent Bill Benton and former three-term mayor Mike Daniels went to Daniels, 270-265, in turnout of about 31 percent (See story, Page 1A).
No other races were contested. Incumbent Vergennes City Council members Lowell Bertrand, Jeff Fritz and Mark Koenig won re-election in March without opposition, as did candidates for Vergennes-Panton water commissioner, lister and auditor.
The members of the Addison Northwest School District board that will assume control of a unified union on July 1 were chosen in March 2016, but the boards that are now operating the supervisory union will still operate until the end of the year.
Chris Cousino won re-election to the Vergennes Union High School board, as did Sue Rakowski for the Vergennes Union Elementary School board.
Residents supported all charitable contributions on the Tuesday ballot.
Vergennes residents do not weigh in on the city budget; the city council will craft the 2017-2018 budget in June and set the city’s municipal tax rate at that time.
Vergennes residents supported the Addison Northwest School District proposed first-ever unified union budget of $21,116,289, which passed overall, 924-699. It will support the four ANWSD schools and its central office, plus the district’s share of the Hannaford Career Center budget. The margin in Vergennes was 303-239.
Vergennes residents also joined their peers in other ANWSD towns in supporting the creation of a $100,000 capital improvement fund by an overall margin of 1,008-608. The vote in Vergennes ran 303-239 in favor.
