WalkOver Gallery exhibits Monkton artist’s “meditative” paintings

BRISTOL — Linda Seiffert Reynolds, artist, art teacher and longtime Monkton resident, is exhibiting her paintings at the WalkOver Gallery during the months of February and March in a show titled “Years of Seasons.” The paintings, all watercolors except for one large pastel, “are meant to offer visual meditation,” through images of transient moments in nature.
Intrigued by clouds, water, sky, layers of land, trees and mountains — subjects that are “momentary,” “shifting” and “glimpsed,” according to the artist — Reynolds finds daily inspiration in exploring how light affects these subjects and in so doing renders the ultimate subject, that of nature’s changing beauty. These moments shift with the time of day, time of year, and the time of one’s perception.
Reynolds chooses watercolors as the best medium with which to capture this immediacy and changeability. Educated at the Rhode Island School of Design, Reynolds uses, as part of her technique, the transparent quality that can be achieved with watercolors.
“Paper, paint, brushes, and light conspire with my hand, eyes, and memory to create,” she says. “Painting is a way of slowing down and celebrating life reverently; even though watercolor painting itself goes quickly, it requires forethought, deliberation, and can’t easily be corrected.”
Visitors are welcome during gallery hours, on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Other days and times are welcome by appointment. The WalkOver Gallery is located at 15 Main St.t in Bristol. More information is at 802-453-3188, ext. 2.
