Middlebury Police Log: Attempted suicides keep police busy
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police and Middlebury Regional EMS officials responded to several reports of suicidal individuals in town last week.
In one May 13 incident officers attempted to speak with a woman in crisis. She jumped on the railing of the Cross Street Bridge and attempted to jump off the bridge. Sgt. Boe grabbed her and pulled her off the railing to safety. She was taken to Porter Hospital where she voluntarily committed herself.
The other reported incidents included a man who was allegedly seen on Route 7 North attempting to get hit by vehicles at around 7:30 p.m. on May 13; a woman in need of help on Merchants Row on May 13; and a drunken, suicidal woman in need of treatment and counseling on May 17.
Police said all of these individual were taken to Porter Hospital to receive medical care and other help.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Cited Devin J. Corliss, 21, of Brandon for grand larceny, after he allegedly stole a laptop computer from the Middlebury College campus on May 11. Police said the laptop was returned to its owner.
• Ticketed a juvenile for being a minor in possession of tobacco in the Butternut Ridge Drive area on May 11.
• Responded to a report of a Middlebury Union High School student sending indecent images to another student on May 11. The Middlebury school resource officer helped resolve the matter, according to police.
• Took to Porter Hospital a juvenile reported to be out of control at a Valley View residence on May 12.
• Issued court diversion paperwork to a juvenile allegedly seen smoking marijuana under the Cross Street Bridge on May 12.
• Responded to a truancy complaint on behalf of MUHS on May 12.
• Assisted a local man who suspected he had become a victim of identity theft on May 12.
• Received a phone call about a woman clad in a hospital gown lying at the side of Route 7 South on May 12. Police said Middlebury Regional EMS gave the woman a ride back to Porter Hospital.
• Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a woman who had taken too much medication in the Washington Street area on May 13.
• Were informed on May 13 of the recent theft of a MacBook computer from Middlebury College campus.
• Cited Mary Shackett-Brouillard, 19, of Middlebury for simple assault and disorderly conduct, following a report of a fight involving two girls at MUHS on May 13. Police said a juvenile girl was also cited with the same charges as Shackett-Brouillard.
• Received a complaint of public defecation off Weybridge Street on May 14.
• Responded to a report of an attempted burglary at St. Mary’s Church on College Street on May 14. A worker in the church confronted a male in the basement who said he was looking for a way out of the church. Later, it was discovered that the male had put an item in the basement that had been stored upstairs; police believe he was attempting to steal the item when confronted.
• Cited Zachariah Rusk, 19, of Middlebury on an outstanding warrant in the Mill Street area on May 14. Rusk was wanted for a probation and parole violation. Police said two other individuals in the area at the same time were issued court paperwork for possession of marijuana, after authorities investigated a report of a possible drug deal in the municipal lot in the Frog Hollow area.
• Assisted a local woman who reported on May 14 that her credit card number had been used to make a transaction in Texas. The complainant said she had not been in Texas.
• Investigated a report of children sitting in the railroad bridge underpass on Seymour Street on May 15.
• Assisted a homeless, elderly woman finding a place to stay for the night on May 15.
• Turned over, to Middlebury College officials, a “heavilyintoxicated” woman found lying on the ground off College Street at around 2:20 a.m. on May 15.
• Served a no-trespass order on a man who had allegedly been causing problems at Two Brothers Tavern on May 15.
• Warned a man for violating the town’s open container ordinance on Adirondack View on May 16.
• Warned another man for violating the town’s open container law, this time on College Street on May 16.
• Received a report about a man found sleeping at the Memorial Sports Center off Buttolph Drive on May 16.
• Responded to a report of a loud party allegedly involving more that 60 students at a South Main Street residence on May 16.
• Requested help from Middlebury Regional EMS to care for a woman in the Twin Circles neighborhood who had taken “numerous” pills with wine on May 16.
• Served a no-trespass order on May 16 on a man who was not wanted at a Court Street business on May 16.
• Received a complaint about some men camping by the train trestle off Water Street on May 18.
• Responded to a report about a drunken man on Main Street on May 17.
• Were informed that someone had anonymously picked up a sexual assault kit from Porter Hospital on May 17.
• Warned a woman for public indecency after seeing her urinating at the side of Adirondack View on May 17.
