MIDDLEBURY — Downtown Middlebury’s Mill Street will be closed to traffic from 7 to 11 a.m. for several consecutive days beginning Monday, Aug. 27, as workers replace sidewalks along the narrow, one-way road linking Main Street with Weybridge Street.
The street and walk will be closed during that morning timeframe until the work is finished, according to Middlebury Director of Operations Dan Werner. Officials have set the morning closure schedule so the contractor can do as much work as possible before the neighborhood shops and restaurant open. The sidewalk will be removed and replaced in sections, with at least four separate sections planned.
The first section will be near the entrance of Edgewater Gallery, down hill to its driveway. The second section will be from Main Street to the Edgewater.
The third section will be from the Edgewater driveway to the Mill walking path.
The last section will be at the bottom near Storm Café.
Pedestrians will have access to shops because workers will be staggering the pours and splitting entrance ways. But there will be times when pedestrians will need to use the stairs up to Park Street.
Vehicle access to the Frog Hollow parking lot will be from Weybridge Street. Traffic control will be present at Weybridge Street and at the lower parking lot to assist. Park Street will be open except when working on the top section uphill from Frog Hollow Alley to Main Street.
Residents and storeowners should expect the work to be noisy at times, especially during the sidewalk removal process.
The work is being done now so the concrete has adequate cure time before winter salting starts.
As with any construction project, weather can affect the schedule, said Werner, who anticipates the work will be completed during the week of Labor Day.
