Edgewater Galleries’ new shows opening soon

AMONG THE WORKS on display this month at Edgewater Gallery at the Falls in Middlebury is “Dear Dairy,” a 30-by-40 inch collage that Betsy Silverman created using cut up magazine pages.

MIDDLEBURY — The Edgewater galleries in downtown Middlebury this month have two new shows opening. Both will also be presented virtually on the galleries’ website, edgewatergallery.co, by mid-August.
“Cut It Out!” is a solo exhibition featuring collage artist Betsy Silverman. Silverman works in what she calls “Fragmented realism” and presents familiar Vermont scenes and still life pieces made entirely of recycled paper.
Browsing through old magazines, Silverman selects, cuts and glues images to a canvas in order to transform the old pictures and text into unique, multidimensional portraits, still lifes, cityscapes and representations of New England, including downtown Middlebury.
“Cut it Out” will be on view for August and September at Edgewater Gallery at the Falls, One Mill St. in Middlebury.
The Edgewater Gallery on the Green, 6 Merchants Row, in August and September is presenting “Elements: Constructed/Deconstructed,” a group show featuring Jonathan Ebinger, Duncan Johnson and Jim Westphalen.
In addition to the exhibits, Edgewater is promoting painting in the outdoors. Downtown Middlebury will be the site of “A Celebration of Plein Air Painting on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 21 and 22. Between 11 a.m. ad 4 p.m. both days five of Edgewater’s plein air artists will practice their craft in various locations.
Meet the artists, observe them working and take the opportunity to purchase work “off the easel.”
After the painting wraps up on that Saturday, Aug. 21, Edgewater will host a cocktail reception and “wet paint sale,” 4-6 p.m. Organizers note that they and the artists will follow social distancing guidelines during the painting and reception.
