Girls' soccer: VUHS and OV net victories
ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes Union High School topped host Middlebury to highlight girls’ soccer play late last week. The Commodores also won again to move over .500, while the Tigers dropped a second home game. In other action Otter Valley picked up a win, but Mount Abraham lost another close contest.
VUHS VS. MUHS
On Thursday the Commodores earned a 3-1 victor at MUHS. Ailey Bosworth scored for the Tigers from just outside the 18 to give her team the first-half lead, but Leah Croke, from Ciara McClay, equalized quickly, and Ema Gernander, from Emily Rooney, gave VUHS the lead before the break.
Rooney added a late pad goal in the second half. Tiger goalies Carly Burger (two saves) and Julia Bartlett (one) split time, and VUHS goalie Kate Gosliga made three saves.
On Saturday the Commodores improved to 4-3-1 by topping winless Missisquoi, 3-0, in their homecoming game. Rooney and McClay had a goal and an assist apiece and Kylie Comeau also scored. Gosliga had another three-save outing, while MVU’s Madison Conley stopped 16 shots.
On Friday visiting Milton outlasted the Tigers, 7-4. MUHS (1-7) struck for an early 2-0 lead, but Emma Wennar scored four times to lead a Milton rally. For Middlebury Ivy Doran recorded two goals and an assist, Michelle Skovsgaard and Merry Kimble also found the net, and Bosworth and Ada Anderson picked up assists.
On Friday OV’s Olivia White (three goals, assist) and Julia Eastman (two goals) paced the attack as the Otters knocked off visiting Bellows Falls, 5-1. The Otters improved to 3-5 with their second straight win, this one in their homecoming game.
On Thursday visiting Milton rallied to defeat the Eagles, 4-3. Milton’s Wennar scored four times, including three in the second half to erase a 3-1 Eagle lead. Chloe Johnston scored twice and Becca Laurent once for Mount Abe, and Addy Harris set up two goals. Eagle goalie Justice Green stopped five shots, and Milton’s Michaelyn Fagan made seven saves.
