MIDDLEBURY — “Back to school day.” Exciting and a little scary for students, even under normal circumstances. But Middlebury Union Middle School on Aug. 25 will add an additional, unprecedented wrinkle or two to the beginning of this new academic year when it greets an incoming class that will include sixth-graders from the Addison Central School District member towns of Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. Oh, and if adding a new grade weren’t enough, MUMS is embarking on its 2021-2022 journey with a new principal, and a new curriculum based on the...
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury-area secondary school-age students on Monday, May 3, will begin attending in-person classes four days a week, instead of the current two. Addison Central School District Superintendent Peter Burrows announced the transition in a Wednesday, April 15, email to the school community. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, middle- and high school students have been attending in-person classes on either Mondays and Tuesdays, or Thursdays and Fridays, with the balance of their studies conducted online. Now those students will attend in-person classes each day of the week...

MICHAEL DUDEK WILL soon take the reins of Middlebury Union Middle School next school year. He’s spent the better part of nine years as the principal of Blackstone Millville Regional High School in Blackstone, Mass.
MIDDLEBURY — Michael Dudek knew he and his spouse, Sarah, would move from their native Massachusetts to Vermont some day. It was either going to be sooner, as a career move, or later, as part of a retirement plan. Sooner won out over later, thanks to an ad for the Middlebury Union Middle School principal vacancy. Dudek — currently the principal of Blackstone Millville Regional High School in Blackstone, Mass. — was among 27 who applied for the MUMS post. Addison Central School District Superintendent Peter Burrows last week confirmed that Dudek, 41, had won the job. Dudek succeeds former MUMS...
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union Middle School will have a new principal come July 1 to help navigate the school through one of its most eventful years ever. His name is Michael Dudek, and for the past eight years he has served as principal of Blackstone Millville Regional High School in Blackstone, Mass. Dudek will succeed former MUMS Principal Kris Francoeur, who had hoped to resume her duties this fall after taking a one-year sabbatical to care for her husband, Paul, who is living with Lou Gehrig’s disease. But Francoeur resigned in January in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the...
ADDISON COUNTY -- An individual associated with Middlebury Union High School has tested positive for COVID-19, according to an announcement Wednesday afternoon from MUHS Principal Justin Campbell. "Luckily, this individual was not in school when contagious and is following all of the guidance from the VT Dept. of Health," Campbell wrote in an email to the MUHS community. "We have been in contact with local and state health officials and all are in agreement that there are no additional restrictions or precautions needed at MUHS." According to the Addison Central School District COVID-19...

KRIS FRANCOEUR
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Union Middle School Principal Kris Francoeur had hoped to resume her duties this fall after taking a one-year sabbatical to care for her husband, Paul, who is living with ALS — also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. But she’s abandoned plans for a return in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the potentially devastating effect the virus could have on her husband’s remaining time, should he become infected. “I couldn’t be certain that I could return to a school building safely in the near future,” Francoeur said in a recent email exchange with the Independent. “We also made...
MIDDLEBURY — A group of 70 Middlebury Union Middle School students will be studying remotely this entire week in light of a recent, positive COVID-19 test confirmed among the MUMS community. “Led by ACSD’s COVID-19 Coordinator Kelly Landwehr, we met with necessary members of school to help us with contact tracing and make decisions on how to best support our continuity of learning,” reads an email sent to the MUMS community this past weekend by Andrew Conforti, MUMS principal. “We are confident that we've shared all critical information related to this positive case.” It was a member of the...
BRANDON/MIDDLEBURY — The first cases of COVID-19 have been reported in two Rutland Northeast Supervisory Union schools and at Middlebury Union Middle School. RNeSU Superintendent Jeanne Collins, herself recovering from the coronavirus at home in quarantine, confirmed those cases on Dec. 18 and sent out an email and a Facebook post to parents and staff. Separately, MUMS Interim Principal Andrew Conforti on Dec. 24 sent out an email to Addison Central School District families telling them that a member of the school community has tested positive. In RNeSU, the positive cases came just two days...
For full disclosure from the start, my wife is a teacher at MUMS, with 20+ years of service and dedication; I am a former middle school teacher; and my daughter will be in the first sixth-grade class to attend MUMS if the move goes through as currently planned. I cannot state strongly enough how ill-planned that move is, and how detrimental it will be, particularly at this moment in time, without adequate resources provided to ensure its success.  In the 11/5/20 “MUMS readies for 6th-graders,” John Flowers correctly notes that the Version 2.0 plan was scuttled last spring. The same night it...

MUMS PRINCIPAL KRISTIN Holsman-Francoeur
MIDDLEBURY — Students returned to classes just seven weeks ago, but Middlebury Union Middle School officials are already getting ready for next fall, which will signal a landmark event in MUMS’s 25-year history. When the curtain comes up on the 2021-2022 academic year, MUMS will — for the first time — begin absorbing sixth-graders from the Addison Central School District’s seven elementary schools in Bridport, Cornwall, Middlebury, Ripton, Salisbury, Shoreham and Weybridge. It’s all part of the ACSD’s ongoing pivot to an International Baccalaureate curriculum, which includes a Middle Years...
