ANWSD elections are heating up

VERGENNES — On Town Meeting Day, when Addison Northwest School District voters go to the polls, they’ll have four school board seats to fill — one in Addison, two in Ferrisburgh and one in Vergennes.
A fifth seat, in Panton, will be appointed by that town’s selectboard.
Two ANWSD board incumbents have decided not to run.
Addison representative George Lawrence and Ferrisburgh representative Laurie Gutowski told the Independent that they won’t seek another term on the board.
At least three district residents will be running to fill their respective seats.
Ferrisburgh resident Chris Kayhart has submitted a petition to run for Gutowski’s seat, and two Addison residents — George Eisenhardt and Amy Kittredge — have thus far stepped forward to run for Lawrence’s seat.
Ferrisburgh representative Bill Clark and Vergennes representative Sue Rakowski, who currently chairs the board, have said they plan to run, as well.
Rakowski will likely face at least two challengers: Martha DeGraaf and Jena Santa Maria.
Panton representative Bradley Dewey’s term expires on Town Meeting Day. He confirmed that he will be discussing the upcoming term appointment with the Panton selectboard, but wouldn’t say whether he wanted to be reappointed or not.
Candidates for school and municipal offices have until Jan. 27 to submit their petitions, which must contain signatures from at least 5% of their town’s registered voters.
The Independent will detail the complete ANWSD board candidate slate next month.
