Bristol residents face slight property tax hike

BRISTOL — Property owners in Bristol will see a slight increase on their tax bills this year.

The Bristol selectboard at its Aug. 23 meeting set the fiscal year 2021-22 municipal tax rate at $0.7289 per $100 of assessed property value.

That’s an increase of $0.0017, or 0.2%.

At the same time, it set the Bristol Police District tax rate at $0.2961, a decrease of $0.0019, or 0.6%.

As a result, residents within the one-square-mile police district will pay a combined municipal rate of $1.025 — a decrease of two-hundredths of a penny from the current year.

Bristol’s education tax rate for FY22 increased by $0.0435, or 2.5%, to $1.7681.

The nonresidential education tax rate increased by $0.0621, or 3.7%, to $1.7474.

In the police district, the overall residential property tax rate increased by $0.0473, or 1.7%, to $2.7931.

The district’s overall nonresidential tax rate increased by $0.0619, or 2.3%, to $2.7724.

Outside the police district, the overall residential property tax rate increased by $0.0492, or 2%, to $2.497.

The overall nonresidential tax rate increased by $0.0638, or 2.6%, to $2.4763.

The common level of appraisal (CLA) for Bristol, as reported by the Vermont Department of Taxes, dropped by 4.35 points to 92.25.

Bristol property owners will see the following tax increases per $100,000 of assessed value:

•  Police district residential: $47.

•  Police district nonresidential: $62.

•  Town residential: $49.

•  Town nonresidential: $64.

Residents who pay based on their incomes are very likely to receive credits for a portion of their school tax bills, and some will also receive municipal tax credits.

In fiscal year 2021 Bristol residents received more than $1.3 million in combined tax credits.
