Baseball: OV splits, Eagles fall

ADDISON COUNTY — As the high school baseball season opened in the past few days, Otter Valley split two away games, and Mount Abraham dropped a road contest.
Vergennes had been set to open at Rice on Saturday, but that game was rained out. It was moved to May 25. The Commodores are scheduled to debut with games at Colchester on Thursday and Enosburg on Saturday.

EAGLES
The Eagles opened on Tuesday with an 11-2 loss at Division I Burlington. Seahorse hurler Cooper Smith held them to three hits and no earned runs through five innings.
Ryan Whitcomb took the loss for the Eagles, allowing three earned runs on four hits. The Eagles will be looking to bounce back when they host the Otters on Thursday.

OTTERS
The D-II Otters on Saturday erupted late to get past host Rutland, 7-2, scoring three runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to wipe out a 2-1 Raven lead.
Ethan Blow pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn the pitching win, following a creditable start by Fraser Pierpont, who allowed two runs on four hits in 4.2 innings.
Rutland starter Jevan Valente allowed one run and struck out 11 in five innings, but the Rutland bullpen couldn’t contain the Otters. Their runs in the sixth came on a walk to Alex Polli, an RBI hit by Jordan Beayon, an RBI grounder by Blow, and an error.
In the seventh, a walk, Pierpont single, hit batsman, a Blow sacrifice fly and Raven miscues plated the runs.
Lane Eddy led the Otters with two hits.
On Tuesday, host Fair Haven scored six times in the first inning off Blow on the way to a 12-2, five-inning victory.
In the big inning, Kohlby Murray tripled, Matt Heibler singled, Carson Babbie stroked a three-run double, and Levi Ryan also picked up an RBI.
Blow and Matt Greeno combined to walk nine Slaters. Babbie finished with five RBIs, and Sawyer Ramey and Trey Lee added two hits apiece. Evan Reed earned the pitching win for FHU.
Caleb Whitney’s RBI double was OV’s offensive highlight.
