MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College indoor track and field teams opened their season on Saturday by hosting a six-team meet in which the Panther women (135 points) finished second and the Panther men (83) were fourth. The Franklin Pierce women (143) and men (147.5) swept the meet.

BEVERLY, Mass. — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team picked up two road shutouts in non-league play this past weekend to improve to 8-0-2.
The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III entering this week behind Plattsburgh, head to Wesleyan this weekend for a two-game series. Through 10 games this season, the Panthers have allowed only four goals and have posted six shutouts.

MONTPELIER — According to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, preliminary numbers show 16,479 deer were taken during Vermont’s 2019 deer hunting seasons, the fourth highest total since 2000.
Reports from big game check stations indicate hunters had successful deer seasons in 2019, taking 3,739 deer in archery season, 1,636 in youth season, 7,467 in rifle season, and 3,637 in muzzleloader season.
The 16,479 deer brought home by hunters this year yielded nearly 3.3 million servings of local, nutritious venison.

VERGENNES — In a boys’ high school basketball rivalry game on Saturday, visiting Mount Abraham opened the second half with a decisive 15-2 run on the way to a 56-38 victory over Vergennes.
The Eagles evened their record at 4-4 with their second straight win, while the 0-6 Commodores saw a chance for their first positive result slip away.

STOWE — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team picked up a key road win on Saturday, defeating host Stowe, 3-1, as the Tigers evened their record at 4-4.
Owen Austin scored for the Tigers as the teams finished the first period tied at 1-1. Tucker Stearns gave MUHS the lead in the second, with an assist from Ryan Nadeau, and Hale Hescock sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.
Tiger goalie Jeff Stearns made 25 saves, and Stowe goalie Ethan Brown stopped 26 shots.
The Tigers will host Colchester at 7 p.m. on Friday.
VERGENNES — At a wrestling meet this past Wednesday at Vergennes Union High School, visiting Spaulding defeated both VUHS and Middlebury, while the Commodores topped the Tigers.
Spaulding bested MUHS, 60-18, and VUHS, 43-32, while VUHS outscored MUHS, 48-18.
