VERGENNES — A back-and-forth girls’ basketball game on Saturday at Vergennes Union High School ended with visiting Harwood dominating overtime and dealing the Commodores a 51-40 setback in the opener for both teams.
Harwood and VUHS traded the lead five times before six Highlanders put up points as they outscored the Commodores, 11-0, in the five-minute overtime.
Both teams had chances to win in the final 15 seconds of regulation. VUHS sophomore Felicia Poirier rebounded one Harwood miss, Highlander Mia Cooper stole an errant VUHS pass, and the Commodores forced a desperation shot by Ashley...
NEWPORT — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team edged host North Country Union/Lyndon on Saturday with a pair of late goals.
Both Tiger scores came in the final four minutes after goalie Abby Hodsden, a late addition to the Tiger roster, held NCU/Lyndon at bay. Hodsden made 26 saves to backstop the victory as the Tigers improved to 2-1.
Bella Gale and Merry Kimble netted the MUHS goals, and Taylor Moulton picked up an assist. Gale scored for the third straight game. NCU/L goalie Courtney Lewis stopped 14 shots.
Next up for the Tigers is their annual holiday tournament this...
RUTLAND — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team broke through for its first win on Saturday, 4-1 over host Rutland.
Devon Kearns scored twice to pace the Tigers, including a clinching empty-net strike in the final minute. Robbie Bicknell’s unassisted breakaway goal at 10:22 of the first period gave the Tigers the lead, and he picked up the main assist on Kearns’ second goal.
The Tigers scored twice in the second period. Hale Hescock netted the first, from Bode Rubright and Joey Niemo, and Kam Bartlett set up Kearns’ initial score.
Rutland’s Ethan Coarse scored at 12:53 of the...
BURLINGTON — A victory by the boys’ four-by-400-meter relay team highlighted the efforts of the Vergennes Union High School indoor track team on Saturday at the University of Vermont.
The Commodores picked up fewer victories than the previous week, according to Coach Brad Castillo, because officials inadvertently treated VUHS like a club team instead of a Division II varsity program. As a result, the Commodores competed against Division I programs, and, while they held their own, won less often.
The 4x400 relay team of Ben Huston, Gabe Praamsma, Xander DeBlois and Julio Quiles posted a time...
ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham toppled Otter Valley to highlight local high schools boys’ basketball action late last week. In other games both Middlebury and Vergennes came up short vs. Division I competition.
Monday games were played after the early holiday deadline for this edition of the Independent.
On Friday, the Eagles rode a big second half past host OV, 72-56.
The Otters sank nine first-half three-pointers and led at the break, 34-33. But Eagle forward Liam Kelliher poured in 19 of his game-high 22 points in the second half as Mount Abe pulled away for the victory.
RANDOLPH — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ basketball team on Saturday posted its first win since the 2017-2018 season, 41-37 at Randolph.
Freshman guard Cady Pitner scored 12 points to lead the Tigers in her varsity debut; she sat out the team’s opening home setback. Sophomore point guard Ivy Doran added eight points as MUHS evened its mark at 1-1.
Ella D’Avignon led the Ghosts with 13 points.
The Tigers will next visit Missisquoi on Jan. 1 and host the Ghosts at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 4.
FAIR HAVEN — Burr & Burton on Saturday rallied to edge the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team, 43-42, in the opening round of Fair Haven’s annual holiday tournament. Both teams were making their season’s debut.
The Eagles led by 24-15 at the half and 39-35 after three periods, but were slowed by foul trouble in the late going — senior point guard Chloe Johnston, who led Mount Abe with 13 points, fouled out with five minutes to go.
The Bulldogs scored the winning hoop with 18 seconds left. Carol Herbert scored 22 points to spark their rally.
Abby Reen added 10 points...

It’s the second of Christmas’s 12 days. The next time you pick up a paper with one of my columns, Christmas will be over. In fact, 2019 will be over. It will be a new year. The way most people tally decades (making the most of the same second-to-last digit of a year), my next column will reach your eyes in a new decade. It will be the fourth decade in which I have put thoughts into words and stories in these pages.
I admit that the passing of individual years means less to me these days, since I passed the half-century age mark more than half a decade ago. Time is definitely speeding up. I...

MIDDLEBURY — An experienced Otter Valley Union High School girls’ basketball team used a big early run to take charge in the Otters’ 51-25 victory this past Wednesday over host Middlebury.
A young MUHS team starting one senior and four sophomores held its own early on, and four Tigers scored in the first four minutes as they took an 8-7 lead.
The Otters then showed why they hope to be a force in Division III this season. They combined inside scoring with long-range marksmanship in a 15-0 run that spanned the rest of the first period and 2:14 of the second quarter. The Tigers came no closer...
