Spring Sports Report: Mt. Abe teams are seeking championships

The spring of 2023 overall treated Mount Abraham Union High School athletes pretty well, even considering a few glitches.

Middlebury Union High School offers its students more athletic choices in most seasons than any other two local schools combined, and spring is no exception — athletes can participate in eight sports at the varsity level alone. 

Two spring sports programs at Otter Valley have each won a Division II title and reached another final since 2014, those being baseball and softball.

The spring of 2023 had to be rated a success for the Vergennes sports teams. 

As was the case with all the county high schools, the spring of 2022 brought a fair measure of success to Middlebury Union High School. 

The sports spring of 2022 could be a tough act to follow at Mount Abraham Union High School over the next couple of months.

Girls’ teams made most of the headlines at Vergennes Union High School in the spring of 2022, when both the softball and Commodore-Mount Abraham cooperative girls’ lacrosse team reached finals. 

The Otter Valley Union High School varsity sports teams each had their own measures of success in 2022.

As always, it’s back to square one this spring, with teams ever hopeful and one more horse in the race: MUHS baseball returns to the varsity level after school officials decided low numbers and inexperience made a JV-only program advisable in 2021.
